Pressure gradient across the mitral valve

Pressure gradient across the mitral valve

A patient of mitral stenosis is taken for catheterization. Pressure gradient across the mitral valve is found to be 20 mm Hg. What is the probable LA Pressure?

[A] 10 mmHg
[B] 15 mmHg
[C] 20 mmHg
[D] 25 mmHg

Normal left ventricular diastolic pressure is 5 mmHg.

  • Pressure gradient across the mitral valve of 20 mmHg
  • Probable left atrial pressure = LVEDP + Transmitral pressure gradient = 5 mmHg + 20 mmHg = 25 mmHg

Pressure gradient across the mitral valve of 20 mmHg suggest – severe mitral stenosis
