Iron absorption


  1. Foods that reduce non-haem iron absorption:
    • – Tea (decrease by > 60%)
    • – Coffee (decrease by > 35%)
    • – Phytates
  2. HCl secreted in gastric juice liberates Fe3+ from non-haem iron and serves to increase solubility of dietary non-haem iron.
  3. pH of duodenum is most conducive for absorption of iron.
  4. Most common site of iron absorption – duodenum
