What is ‘Mitral facies’?

Mitral facies is a distinctive facial appearance associated with mitral stenosis [ Severe mitral stenosis]

Features – Rosy cheeks, whilst the rest of the face has a bluish tinge due to cyanosis.


Mechanism

  1. Low cardiac output produces – vasoconstriction
  2. Peripheral cyanosis – lips, the tip of nose, and the cheeks.
  3. Malar flush – because of vasodilation (vascular stasis) in the malar area.
