Iron absorption
Factors that increase iron absorption are all EXCEPT
[A] vitamin C
[B] Glutathione
[C] Coffee
[D] HCl secreted in gastric juice
Iron absorption
- Foods that reduce non-haem iron absorption:
- – Tea (decrease by > 60%)
- – Coffee (decrease by > 35%)
- – Phytates
- HCl secreted in gastric juice liberates Fe3+ from non-haem iron and serves to increase solubility of dietary non-haem iron.
- pH of duodenum is most conducive for absorption of iron.
- Most common site of iron absorption – duodenum
