Faggot cells mostly suggests diagnosis of


  • [A] Tuberculosis
  • [B] CML
  • [C] Acute promyelocytic leukemia
  • [D] Osteosarcoma


  • Faggot cells are bundles of stick-like Auer rods formed by coalescence of primary granules.
  • Their presence, although reported in other types of leukemia, is a morphological clue suggesting APL.

Why it is called as Faggot cell?

  • Faggot cells are cells normally found in the hypergranular form of acute promyelocytic leukemia (FAB – M3).
  • These promyelocytes (not blast cells) have numerous Auer rods in the cytoplasm which gives the appearance of a bundle of sticks so called as Faggot cells.

What is the Meaning of Faggot?

  • Faggot – a bundle of sticks bound together as fuel.

Faggot cell in AML-M3
  • A single “faggot” cell with numerous Auer rods is present in a background of normal neutrophil precursors.
  • A faggot cell (bottom left of the central cell cluster) with a prominent collection of Auer rods from a patient with acute promyelocytic leukemia.
